How do you make sure your ebook writing doesn’t SUCK?

In other words, what aspects of ebook writing do you have to pay specific attention to in order to sell more and satisfy your customers so they won’t return your ebook and hopefully recommend it to others?

Ebook Writing Tip #1:  Focus on a desired outcome.  Top selling ebooks focus on a highly desired outcome and deliver on what they promise.  In the “how to” information publishing space you are typically helping your reader achieve an outcome (be, have, do or get something OR avoid something).   Your ebook must be a set of steps, strategies, techniques and tips toward achieving that end result.

Ebook Writing Tip #2: Differentiate your approach.  It also should somehow be differentiated from your competition – people don’t want to read the same thing over and over again. It’s not that you have to come up with an entirely different approach – but differentiate YOUR system in some way from other information that exists out there will make your ebook writing a step ahead of your competition.

Ebook Writing Tip #3:  Easy-to-read, straightforward, short paragraphs and conversational tone.  These aspects of ebook writing will mean that you connect with your reader, they find your writing easy to read and can both learn and APPLY the information you include which will really enhance the value of your information. A good way to make sure you achieve all of these objectives is to outline your ebook project as a series of questions that your customer would ask on the way to achieving the overall outcome desired.  This not only makes your ebook writing so much easier and faster, it also automatically helps you write in a more conversational, easy-to-read style

Ebook Writing Tip #4: Use some well-placed graphics, tables, images, and columns to display your information.  A major part of making your ebook and other info product product look more professional has to do with using the basic presentation elements available within desktop pubilshing programs like Microsoft Word.  Instead of writing about the different calorie burn rates of exercises, place them in a table – add some color to the row headings and make it look professional with a few minutes work.  Separating chapters or main sections with a colored text box is a common way to format ebooks that looks professional.  Have a cover profressionally designed – you can often get this done for nothing at the same time you have your ebook cover designs done by a graphics specialist.   Use the templates and techniques outlined over at InfoMarketer’sZSone to get more ideas on making your ebook look great!

Ebook Writing Tip #5:  Ensure you keep it interesting.  You can do this by adding case studies, real world examples, mini-interviews, summary checklists at the end of each chapter, related images, accompanying support files such as reports, spreadsheets, powerpoint presentations, audio or video files…these extras can really enhance the opinion of your ebook and make a big impact on sales and profits as well.

The difference between writing a professional, highly regarded ebook has a huge impact on sales, but really is very little extra work.  Make sure your ebook writing doesn’t SUCK  – now get writing!

Finally – and I can’t emphasize this enough – don’t seek to inform, seek to achieve an outcome for your prospect. People don’t buy ebooks to get general information, they buy them to get specific answers to questions they have on achieving an outcome in their lives.
