Having one of the top ebook writing and ebook marketing services on the net, we get asked all kinds of questions around finding ebook topics, writing ebooks and getting them up for sale on the internet.
But let me start this post by asking YOU a question that I think will blow you away!
How many times have you given your friends, family or even strangers advice this past week?
It could have been advice you have on raising a teenage son, how to pick a great wine, how to lose a few pounds, the best hotels or attractions in a given part of the world you have traveled to, how to eat healthier or the millions of other tidbits you share with others to help them improve their lives.
Are you an expert or do you have ALL of the answers?
No?
But that doesn’t matter does it?
The reality is that you can give advice (based on personal experience, something you have read or something you know has worked for someone around you) that will help others to increase pleasure or reduce pain in their life.
That’s what information-based products like non-fiction ebooks are all about…doesn’t seem as daunting now does it?
The fact is housewives, frustrated employees, unemployed, students and senior citizens have all been successful in packaging their advice into information products…so it absolutely can be done!
What I wanted to do today is share with you a system that has worked over and over again for nearly anyone who wants to put their own ebook up on the internet and start generating profits within a 30-day period…
STEP 1 – PICK A TOPIC
So many people agonize over the exercise of choosing a market for their ebook.
I’m all about making things simple though, because when things are simple people get it done and it works.
So, when you are thinking a market for writing an ebook and selling it online keep one principle in mind…
Your ebook topic should be aimed at a group of people who share a passionate/desperate desire to experience a transformation in their life
For example, if someone is emotionally distraught over having to deal with an aging parent or a teenage son, they hit a point where they will jump online and look to transform from desperation to a better place where they have more control over that part of their life.
Another example, people hit a point when they desperately hate (and perhaps are experiencing emotional or physical challenges) their job…so you target ways they can escape (a radical transformation) from that place.
If you can, pick a topic where you yourself have gone through such a transformation…that way you can draw on your own experience, knowledge, examples and proof points. While this is not necessary to write an ebook, it is the “low-hanging fruit” as I like to say.
STEP 2 – DEVELOP A SYSTEM
People struggle to write…most people find writing a challenge.
The good part about writing an information-based ebook is that you are really creating a step-by-step process that explains the system through which your reader will realize their desired transformation.
Believe me, that takes all of the pressure off of writing, and actually makes it fun, simple and very fast to put together your own ebook or training course (more on that in a minute)
The key is to KNOW that your ebook is really a guide, course, system, formula, or training program that walks your reader through a series of steps, realizations and actions until they reach a certain position you target as the outcome for your ebook.
Imagine what your outline looks like…
Step 1… Do A
Step 2…Then Do B
Step 3…Now do C
And so on…until you reach the conclusion
STEP 3 – THINKING LIKE A PRODUCT CREATOR
When people come to InfoMarketer’sZone they are confused as to the format to use for their content – do they write a Kindle ebook, a report, an ebook on Clickbank, a printed book, some other form of course?
When you put together a system that others can use then I would look seriously at putting together course, manual, formula, system, etc…that combined the traditional elements of an ebook (but written in more of a course, step-by-step format) with some added material such as…
- video or audio covering some aspects that can be shown or explained further
- A checklist of the steps in the system
- An exercise at the end of each step to help them take action
- A monthly Q&A call or webinar for customers (you could link this is a GOLD version of your product if you wanted multiple tiers)
- Audio interview – have someone interview you as the one that has previously succeeded with this system
Now you have a package that you can sell for $97, $197, $397 or more depending on the value and competition
Once you have a package like this with proven results it will become attractive to affiliates (existing website and list owners in your niche market that often promote other people’s products for commission – a terrific sales channel for you online)
STEP 4 – DECIDING WHERE TO SELL YOUR EBOOK OR INFOPRODUCT
How you sell it (Clickbank, Paypal, etc…) will be less about the platform and more around if you want integrated affiliate management (like CB gives you) or if you want to manage that yourself.
You could, in future, put a shorter version (higher level or part of the solution) into a Kindle ebook if you wanted as another method of generating customers and leads…but your package should be higher end than Kindle ebooks.
At this point you have your own high-value information product targeting a strong, in-demand niche market, you have a title and price for your product as well as a key value proposition in your marketplace AND you have a place to sell it…that gets us 90% of the way there…the other 10% involves launching and getting traffic to your ebook…something we will cover in the next blog post.
YOUR TURN…
Let me hear from you…has this been valuable? Do you have other questions you need answered? Leave us a comment.
Excellent post Jeff, I’ve never quite thought of an ebook as just sharing advice – makes it much less intimidating to write. This helps also because I’ve had trouble organizing my thoughts on what to write…now I realize it wouldn’t have come out right anyway. Thanks!
Hi Jeff, great advice, thank you. But how would this work e.g. if I want to write an e-book about a travel destination? I can write such an e-book once, I can update it etc., but I can’t convert it into a course with exercises, webinars, high-end products and such. How then can I turn such an e-book into a sustainable, scalable product? I would love to hear some feedback on this. Thanks!
Absolutely – this is exactly what you want to think throgh…some markets lend themselves to higher-end product opportunmities more than others.
With travel – one common approach is to either offer multiple guides bundled for an upsell over a single guide or to move a portion of your customers into a membership site that gives them updated information on a recurring basis, both of these can move your customer well beyond a $17-$27 initial ebook.
For example, if you write a guide about travel to Europe, you could start with a general guide that gives a 1-week, 2-week or 1-month itenerary of exploring from a home-base (say London, Paris or Germany) and then you can have separate guides that drill into specific cities. One important aspect of travel products is knowing the exact market you are writing for. It’s good to go sub-niche to focus on a particular category like single male, family, seniors, honeymooners, etc…
In effect, you want to answer the main questions that sub-niche will have about the destination in a step-by-step fashion and then continue to feed them products that will take them beyond their current experience. You can also branch out to “how to find the best deal” guides for hotels, restaurants, transportation/rental cars, tours, and so on…
Jeff
Thank you for this food for thought, Jeff. This is valuable information that I will work on!
Thank you very much for this great opportunity.
