I was talking the head of a city-wide writing group the last couple of days and discovered that of their 75 members, nearly 3/4 of them had already written or started to write their first book.

Not surprisingly, most had not been formerly trained in writing or English, though most were college graduates.

But more important, none of them had what I like to call the “Marketing Mindset”

That is, they all realized that they were not marketers and certainly had concerns as well as some planned training scheduled to help them market and sell their book.

That got me to thinking…how many writers, info product publishers and marketers wait until AFTER they have chosen their topic, written their outline, even finished their book or ebook BEFORE thinking about how they will market or sell it?

Probably 95% – possibly even more?

BOOK WRITER’S MARKETING MINDSET

Having worked with successful authors and first-time book writers for years over at InfoMarketer’sZone – there is clearly a BIG problem here.

See, the Marketing Mindset required to successfully market a book to an audience starts with the niche market you choose, the topic you use to guide your book or ebook, the “angle” or unique position you take to differentiate your work from all of the others…this has to be BUILT-IN to your writing project from the beginning.

Think about it…you have just spent the last 3-months using every last minute of your free time to write a  book about your passion – let’s say you have an interest in helping people relax and live a stress-free life  (just picked this one out of the air folks!)…now you have to write a product description, sales letter and some ad copy that will help sell that book.

To effectively market you need to focus like a laser beam on a segment of the market – let’s say you decide that stressed-out Mom’s are the target.

Wait a minute…if you had of just thought about that BEFORE you wrote the book, maybe more of the content would have focused on the problem’s of stressed-out Mom’s – hmmmmm

Okay, now we need to focus on the #1 concern that impacts stressed-out Mom’s – what frustrations and anxieties do they have that lead to a strong desire to change?

Perhaps it is that they feel completely socially isolated and fear losing everything they had before their first child (career, friends, active social life, loving husband, free time, etc…)

Oooops….again, if we had only thought of that BEFORE we started writing, imagine how we could have constructed the book to directly address these feelings and sources of anxiety within our target market?

Every aspect of how your book idea is developed, your book outline takes shape, your title is designed and your content researched has to do with how you will market your book AFTER it is written.

Waiting until you are already started writing your book or even worse, after you are finished is one of the biggest reasons why most books simply DO NOT SELL.

Make sure you don’t make the same mistake, follow the 45-day Info Publishing Blueprint which helps you implement the “Marketing Mindset” so that your book is a surefire winner when it hits the web or retail stores.
