When it comes to marketing online, there is 1 fundamantal, almost universal mistake that newbie (and many established) online marketing professionals make – yet it seems so obvious almost nobody thinks to look at this most basic of reasons.

From my own experience coaching internet business and info product entrepreneurs in our internet coaching and membership program, 99% of enthusiastic, capable, soon-to-be entrepreneurs lack a sound understanding of what business they are in, or how to pick one if they have not yet decided.

The belief is that being ON the internet with their own website and some web marketing basics constitutes a business when nothing is farther than the truth.

Just as the most successful offline businesses in today’s world have a firm grasp on who they are targeting and what ‘value’ they bring to that marketplace – the internet marketing business that will gain top profits also must clearly understand their business and niche market.

You can learn all of the system, plans, formulas and use all of the tactics, strategies and tools you want but you will not be successful if you don’t clearly identify a market, a desire and corresponding value proposition of what you can bring to that market in exchange for profit. 

Another important point – you must also match your business and value to your skills, strengths and interests. 

You wouldn’t open a brand new restaurant in your neighborhood if you didn’t love the business of serving food would you?

Then why is it any different online.  Why would you start a website about ‘Pet Dogs’ (just one example) if you have zero knowledge or interest in that topic?  And, why would you start an online business where you publish hundreds of websites if you’re greatest interest and strength is teaching people? 

The internet marketing secret that everyone misses has nothing really to do with internet marketing at all — it has more to do with sound business planning and business strategy. 

The good news is that once you have clarity on WHAT you will deliver to your hungry market and HOW, then you can navigate the IM tips, techinques and strategies much more effectively as you only choose those relevant to your market and business model. 

In other words, pick the right market that matches your interests, skills – locate a hot demand within that market and THEN put the online marketing principles to work for you.
