Where should you send your customer after they complete a purchase for one of your products online?

Do you send them to a Thank You page?

Or, is it better to try and up-charge them with a One Time Offer (OTO)?

How about sending them back to your blog or another content page on your site?

Here is what has been working best for us on many websites selling information products.
1. One-Time-Offers

If you have a related product or service that you can offer to your customer that is closely aligned with your product then you want to establish a One-Time-Offer  – this can be done in two different places:
a) AFTER your prospect completes their initial order (let’s say you have a $20 ebook on weight loss) where you can offer them a OTO to get a special price.  For example, let’s say you also have a $27/month membership site, perhaps you give them a OTO to get your membership at half price or for just $100, they get 1-year membership.  In our experience we have seen upward of 60% go for this type of offer and your profits increase by nearly 400%
b) AFTER your prospect clicks the order button but BEFORE they complete the full order, this scneario also works better than no OTO at all, but pulls at a lower rate than the option above.  There are two possible reasons, either the prospect gets confused by the multiple offers and don’t end up ordering anything at all or they simply abandon the process because they have been given too long to think about the overall order.
Either way, you can pull 200%-400% more profit from your efforts using one-time-offers.
2. Thank You Pages
Whether you have one-time-offers or just the initial sale, you do need to follow the completed sales with Thank You pages.
You do need to have a Thank You page just to confirm to your customer that their order was processed, otherwise they get antsy, some go back and order agian, others email you…

I would serously look into using a script such as DLGuard or others that gives out a one-time download link to customers once payment is made – this link is typically good for 24-48-hours and is unique to that customer.

Alternatively, you can include an autoresponder login/pswd to go out upon confirmation of an order.

On the Thank you page we typically acknowledge the order, mention a quote or two testimonial reinforcing the customer’s decision, give them a contact email they can use to reach us if there are any questions and a notice that they will get an email in approx 3-days asking them for feedback on the product (we do this to get feedback and secure testomonials automatically from our customers)

If you have any questions on your sales funnel or how you should setup your sales order and response function for your online business, leave us a comment on the blog and we’ll do our best to get you an answer.
