It’s the #1 problem we all wrestle with when we set out to write our first (or next) info product – Will My Idea (Or Topic) Sell?

We know there are lots of flops out there – ebooks, books and training programs that never seem to hit the market, or when they do, their sales activity reminds you of a wet noodle.

Have you had a product like that – I know I have, more than one actually.

To double the frustration, some of my early flops came when I “over-developed” my info products.

What I mean by “over-developed” simply means that hitting an unknown market with a polished, deep product is neither necessary or smart.

When you approach a new market with an info product, you want to quickly get something out to the market to “test” the waters – with mutliple test cases out there you can then let the market decide which one they want to pay you more for and from there – focus on the businesses and info products that deliver the greatest profits.

When I say quick products I don’t mean low quality, just less ambitious until you know your market will buy.

For example, instead of writing a 200-page ebook on weight loss to test your ability to capture sales within than market, put together a quick 30-page ebook that tests a very specific aspect of weight loss such as motivation, a small set of highly effective exercises, a specific diet guide, a focused guide on lowering stress to lower your weight, etc…

OK – so back to the question “Will My Product Sell”

After getting caught up spending weeks flailing around trying to answer this question as our business considered new info product options – we put together this foolproof, quick 3-step checklist for assessing new info product ideas and topics – give it a try:

a) Can you clearly identify a highly desired OUTCOME associated with the topic you picked?  For instance, if the topic is pet training…what is the ultimate OUTCOME your market desires and why?  They want a better behaved pet – correct?  But why?  Is it because they are embarassed by their badly behaved pet?  Is it because they fear they will lose their pet if it cannot be kept under control?  If you can identify a desired outcome and a big WHY behind the desire, then give your idea a checkmark.

b) Do you see other products (ebooks, reports, books, DVD’s, membership sites, seminars…) that target the same desired outcome?  Start by looking on Google, Clickbank, Amazon, and Commission Junction to see if there are products that target the same desired outcome you want to target – in our example, having a well behaved pet. Two other things you want to note…what are their price points (can you find high-end products as well as low-end?) and do they appear to be selling well (high Clickbank gravity, decent Amazon sales rank, relatively popular Alexa ranking for the sales site are a few ways to check popularity).

c) What ist he health of the distribution channel.  One of the most important aspects of making big profit with your own info products is your ability to tap into existing authority sites in your niche market and have them put your product in front of their visitors with an ad, a recommendation, a review or other affiliate marketing techniques.  Think about having dozens of high-traffic, trusted website owners in the pet training niche promoting, recommending and endorsing your products to their marketplace – what would that do for your sales and list-building campaigns?  But…in order to make this happen you need to make sure you can identify a dozen or so potential partners in your niche that 1) Have a clear channel to promote products such as an ezine, forum, blog or website where they mention affiliate products and 2) They are currently endorsing other affiliate products which makes them much more likely to entertain other endorsement offers.

If your idea or topic passes these 3 test criteria…

1) Desire for outcom with big WHY
2) Proven Buying Activity
3) Healthy Distribution Channel

Then you should stop considering and sprint into action RIGHT AWAY.

There are thousands of markets that meet these criteria, each day you put off taking action means another day that you will delay your new lifestyle of earning more, enjoying more and having more.
