Many of you reading this blog know we have been creating, marketing and selling information products ourselves for nearly two decades now and have helped untold thousands of others do the same through Info Marketer’sZone – what you may NOT know is this concept of “Utility” and how important it is to today’s product ideas and creation.
Utility is a simple, yet powerful concept – it means something you can USE to accomplish and end objective.
So, here’s the difference (let’s look at weight loss as just one simple example to drive this home)
Telling someone about weight loss is INFORMATIONAL
Sharing with your audience what works and what doesn’t for weight loss is EDUCATIONAL
Outlining potential methods people can use to lose weight is INSTRUCTIONAL
Providing a step-by-step system that your audience can use + feedback along the way is a UTILITY
Information products (otherwise known as “how to” or “expert-based” products) that focus on being a UTILITY sell for more profit, get more word-of-mouth, see more demand and brand you far greater than information products that are designed to simply inform, educate or instruct people. Â
Software programs are a UTILITY
Your Netflix subscription is a UTILITY
Your daily exercise program is a UTILITY
Do you see the difference?
When you deliver information designed to simply educate and inform it’s a one-time consumption model by your customer…then it leaves their mind and it’s gone!
When you deliver a UTILITY-based info product you trigger ongoing consumption and stay top-of-mind to your customer for weeks, months or even years…all the while they tell others about it, continue to pay you (or pay a very large amount up-front), continue to follow and learn from you and help your products go viral.
If you wonder what it takes today to create products that make large profit, get word-of-mouth publicity and marketing and continue to brand you an expert in your marketplace – think UTILITY
