The more important something is to you and the longer it will take for that “something” to pay off, the greater the chance that you will put it off.
What we know about procrastination is that we are very likely to put off acting on something if it..
- Will lead to the desired outcome in the future (anything beyond now starts eating away at our ability to take immediate action)Â
- Means so much to you that you have convinced yourself you CANNOT afford to fail
So, when it comes to starting your own business and putting 110% into that business we have both of these working against us don’t we?
A business is like a seed in a garden, it takes time and nurturing to grow – sometimes years
The reasons you want to start your business are also typically highly emotional (to escape debt, to overcome a traumatic layoff, to live the life you have been dreaming about for decades), in other words, we’re dealing with some pretty high stakes here aren’t we?
Stop Your Natural Tendency Is To Avoid What You Want Most
Bottom line, the chance that you will procrastinate putting off the most important part of growing your business are extremely high and that’s why most people never do or believe they can ease into it making a deal with their mind that they have a “hedge” by convincing themselves they likely won’t succeed anyway (avoiding the fall)
Now that you are aware of this natural tendency to put off the important stuff, you can deal with it by:
- Consciously deciding what is MOST important in your life
- Listing the steps required to get there
- Living each day with the motto – “It Has To Be Now”
Prioritize the important stuff…make sure you block your day to get the most out of your productive time, don’t let anything or anyone interfere.
When you study truly successful people you do find they are borderline “obsessed” with their “important stuff” – to the point that others may think they have gone over the edge!
But that’s honestly what it takes to ensure they do it now and protect from the dark forces of procrastination.
Do you have an example where you were able to counter the resistance to put something off or perhaps you have an experience where you did put it off and that as of today you no longer will?
