I’m sure you are aware that a good portion of Google’s wealth comes from advertising – one can look at every move they make, every investment or acquisition as adding more users and more granularity to segment their user population further enhancing the value of their advertising.

Google’s pay-per-click goliath – Adwords – is a terrific way to quickly attract highly targeted traffic to your website, but it can also be a major money pit where you lose and Google earns a fortune.

Earlier today I answered an email from a subscriber that just paid a consultant to setup and operate a month-long Google Adwords campaign for her online business – a couple of hundred dollars later she hadn’t made a sale, and instead of looking at WHY, turfed her consultant and came looking for another.

If  had known it was so easy to get a few hundred bucks out of someone, what the hell am I doing in this business!!

Just kidding…but you get my point.

Unless you are carefully tracking your conversions – or how many actions come from your Google Adwords campaigns, then chances are you are making Google a fortune, while you get poorer and poorer.

In my experience, you NEVER get a Google Adword campaign right for your business on the first try, or the second try, or even the third.

Instead, it can take up to a month of almost daily tweaking to find the right balance of keywords, ad language, traffic and conversions where you win – so anyone that has spent a month and a few hundred dollars testing Google Adwords pay-per-click and sees NO results should not be looking for a new contractor, but needs to do some new testing to find out what works.

Turns out in this case, there were likely many reasons – not the least of which is a horrible looking website with a weak value proposition and product.

Nough said!  I have no problem with Google making a fortune, just make sure they’re not doing it at your expense.

By the way – if you would like help on all aspects of online marketing, business building, product creation and yes – pay-per-click advertising, you’ll find a great group of experts (and yes ME) over at InfoMarketer’s Zone.
