I would say that 100% of the people that join us over at Information Marketer’s Zone seeking to improve the results of their business lack the focus it requires to build the business they are dreaming about.
Sure, some are completely disoriented and have a longer way to go than others, yet after years of building businesses with members inside the Zone, lack of focus is often the #1 (or at least in the top 3) factors that prevent them from achieving the results and satisfaction they long for in their venture.
Lack of focus hurts an entrepreneur in so many ways:
- You never get to realize the power of momentum – which means you are always “pushing the rock up a hill”
- You confuse your followers, market and customers so they go away (even though they may like you at one time)
- You lose credibility because you do not appear committed to your market and business
- Top partners and influencers will spot lack of focus quickly and will quickly run the other way
- You lose significant leverage you would otherwise get from being consistent, persistent and focused
- You miss key opportunities simply because you weren’t ready and focused when they came along
- You are always spending money, time and energy getting very little back in return
Being unfocused will kill your business, stunt your potential and eventually cause you to burn out completely.
The good news is that we can all learn to become more focused, and when you do, you will see the true power of what focus can bring to your business.
5 Techniques To Becoming A Laser-Focused Entrepreneur
1. Know Your Long-Term and Shorter-Term Objectives (And The Difference Between The Two)
Too many aspiring entrepreneurs either do not set goals, set ONLY short-term goals (I want to be a millionaire within a year) or set ONLY long-term goals that are too fuzzy or not emotional enough (I want to own my own business 5-years from now). Top entrepreneurs have URGENT and emotional big-picture goals AND daily/weekly goals that fuel them each and every day keeping them laser-focused no matter what distractions may come up.
2. Identify The Passion In Your Long-Term Goals
We mentioned that your long-term goal should be clear, BIG and emotionally charged…you must find a way to make your long-term goal for your business to be aligned with a passion in your life. That passion may be around the difference your products make on people or the world, it may be around building a business to a certain size and what that will mean for the important people and employees who take the ride with you or it may be around spending the next 10-15 years controlling and using your full potential as a creative, energetic and intelligent individual. You MUST find the passion in what you do or focus will not be possible.
3. Surround Yourself With Others Who Share Your Purpose/Passion
I get asked a lot about disconnecting with negative or non-supportive people by aspiring entrepreneurs, my answer is to just spend time building your network or like-minded, supportive, and positive people – when that happens you will find your energy transitions to these people and the others will have less impact on your life naturally. Network however you can – on-line, through events, cold-calling, partnerships, etc…
4. Meditation For Focus
People who do not meditate see it as an escape, a way to run away from a busy life or a method to hypnotize yourself into other thought patterns – all of these are incorrect assumptions. When done correctly, meditation allows your natural thoughts, energy and spirit to come to the forefront making the 15-20 minutes you spend on meditation each day one of the most powerful tools an entrepreneur can use to achieve focus and momentum.
5. Know What It Takes To Succeed
A way too many entrepreneurs we work with have no idea how much work, persistence, energy and patience it takes to create a successful business. So, when they hit the first hurdle, get bored, lose faith, doubt their own ability or face any number of challenges uncertainty creeps in which prompts them into giving up on the current path, losing focus and chasing after alternatives that can make them feel like they are doing something more productive. Of course, successful entrepreneurs know that business success takes tremendous dedication, patience, tenacity, faith and self-confidence – when you realize this, then you can maintain focus without getting distracted
