Combine the sales from ebooks, books, on-line training courses, consulting, coaching and membership programs and you will quickly notice that there are 10’s of Billions of dollars being made in the digital information product and training market
What’s really interesting is how that space is evolving.
10-years ago this space was dominated by celebrities, guru’s, a tiny portion of Elite authors who were able to get the attention of traditional publishers and very large institutions who ran the on-line training market as a monopoly.
Fast-forward to today and things are VERY different.
The vast majority of top earners in the information product, knowledge product and on-line digital training market today are individuals – just like you – who have identified a desire for knowledge and transformation in a segment of the market and then used the powerful and inexpensive tools and platforms available to them today to blast their content out and make reams of sales and profit from their knowledge.
You have platforms such as Clickbank, Udemy, Amazon and dozens of others to help you easily create, sell and gain leverage from your own digital e-course or training program.
The question then becomes, how do you come with good ideas for your own top selling digital training program? (I owe you an explanation…when I say digital training program I am referring to any non-fiction, information-based content that you sell for profit – that could include an e-book, home study course, video training program, webinar, on-line coaching, membership site or any other method of offering and delivering knowledge to your marketplace.
Here are 4 ways you can use to help quickly uncover hot selling digital training course ideas and turn them into your own hot selling program.
#1 – Look For Problems, Frustrations and Desire For Change
Being finely tuned to recognize signs of hot selling digital information products, each day there are literally dozens of potential ideas that I come into contact with – most of them simply by watching discussion, comments and feedback on-line.
For example, one of my “secret weapons” are Reddit discussion groups. Try searching for a maket + Reddit Discussion – for example, let’s try Stress Management + Reddit Discussion – here are the results as of the time we wrote this post after clicking on the Reddit/Meditation discussion forum.
What is super interesting about digging into Reddit discussion is that you see, by rank, the popularity of the discussion and you see how many comments there are – this allows you to quickly zone in on the comments that are getting the most attention (good for finding the more popular desires, topics and potential ideas for your digital training product)
What you are looking for here are posts that demonstrate a sign of someone who has struggled, been frustrated or found a solution to a problem – for example, in the meditation case, there was a post about “what motivated you to begin meditating”.
This is pure GOLD – this post alone provides you ideas on exactly what market to tackle – some answers were related to stress, others were related to diseases or illnesses, addictions and even relationship issues.
You can use a similar approach to examine popular blog discussions, comments against news articles and comments against books or magazines on sites such as Amazon.
The idea is EXACTLY the same – you look for those comments that stand out, note the desire or frustration associated and then move on…within a few hours you will have dozens of finely-tuned ideas for your own digital training program.
#2 – The “Book Seeding” Approach
I’ve covered this in the course within Information Marketer’s Zone and some of you may have watched my Snapchat stories showing you actual examples (Follow us on Snapchat if you are not already).
The idea is to take the top 5-10 best-selling, non-fiction books in a given market (search them up on Amazon or hit your local bookstore), open them up and make note of the Table of Contents asking yourself “what specific problem, frustration or question is this chapter addressing?”
What you will find when you do this across a number of the leading books is that you will have a few of those Chapters stand out in terms of consistency and in terms of importance.
In the vast majority of cases you can turn that Chapter or combine a few of the Chapter ideas into a separate digital training program…here’s why.
- Top-selling books get attention – their built-in commercial appeal helps you assess the importance and popularity of the content inside (in most cases)
- Books are notoriously general and typically give no more than 10-20 pages of content for any one chapter. The fact is that the most important chapters can EASILY be expanded into hours of training material, an ebook of its own, a webinar series or even the topic of a membership site.
- Books target one modality – text/reading…there are huge opportunities in teaching your own material on this topic using video, case-studies, coaching, audio, etc…
Branching out from top selling products is an excellent, proven way to not only come up with your own digital product ideas, but to succeed wildly commercially with them as well.
#3 – There’s Gold In Those Questions….
How many times a day do you answer questions or help someone you know with a problem?
Feels great doesn’t it?
In fact, we do it so often during a day that chances are you don’t even recognize all of the times you do answer questions or provide advice to someone.
Being a high-profit digital information product publisher and marketer often simply involves listening and seeking out questions around a given topic.
Here are a few ways you can use to uncover these Golden Questions:
- Attend events, seminars, webinars, calls or meetings where you know the market you are interested in will be. By simply being present you will notice several questions, frustrations and requests for advice in a 1-2 hour time period
- Produce some content that is purposely designed to engage and bring out comments and questions. You’re going to want to begin to build a presence on-line anyway – so go ahead and start a blog, a YouTube channel, a Facebook page and head over to Instagram and Twitter – begin to follow the more popular players in your industry and start posting content yourself that is open-ended, editorial, asks for feedback, etc…
- Tap into engagement from other market leaders. In today’s society where social networking and being transparent is so critical to successful on-line marketing, market leaders can’t help but leave you breadcrumbs on the most urgent questions and challenges they hear from their marketplace. Follow those players and keep a keen eye on how and where they engage with their prospects where you will get to see first-hand their top product ideas in action.
#4 – Asking What’s Next…
Another superb way to uncover top selling digital training product ideas is to take the existing state of information and products in that market and ask “what’s next?”
In other words, if the market read, understood and applied the information that was available within a given market — what would they need to do NEXT to help them achieve their desired outcome?
