Twitter can be an excellent place to network, establish new affiliate and expert relationships and create a loyal, responsive following – but…

It takes ‘social marketing’ to keep from alienating your audience or getting kicked off Twitter altogether.

Here are some rules to follow that will help you build your business using Twitter…

1. Use your real identity and picture.  Social networks like twitter want to TRUST you, but to do that they need to know who they are dealing with.  I see many people join twitter with nicknames and avatars (symbols, clipart or pictures that represent them instead of REAL pictures of themselves).  You’ve already blown your chances if you someone doesn’t trust who you are.

2. Spamming with nothing but commercial posts.  There are ways to get your links into Twitter in a constructive, effective way, but placing ad after ad is NOT the way.  I’ve noticed my twitter following grow allot in the last few days – what I’ve doing is posting 4-5 times a day with solid tips and content I’ve found as I monitor my market.  Once in a while (probably one in 20 posts I’ll throw in a link for my own products), but they are in context of sharing an experience, case study or tip not worded as a useless ad.

Try it out, join Twitter and head over to MY TWITTER PROFILE and click on the ‘Follow’ tab at the top.  From there, you’ll notice my posting behavior and get some great training along the way.

So yes, you can link to your own or an affiliate product once in a while IF you are still adding value.

Here’s a great way to add value.  Start with a strong blog posting that helps people learn about a technique or strategy you have practiced from your own product or an affiliate product you promote – including the result – if it’s relevant, then tweet about it linking back to the blog posting.

That way, you are not putting direct commecial links into your twitter posts, but instead link back to solid content – a blog post, article, video or other information that adds value.

It’s simple, if there’s value, people will continue to read, they will gain trust in you and over time, will join your lists keeping a closer eye on what you are doing – and even buy products and services from you.
