It seems every week I come across a story similar to this one where a non-writer puts together their own book, e-book or other how-to product based on personal experience.

In this case, a woman who dedicated her life to running a non-profit animal shelter is providing both an entertaining story about her experiences and advice for others who want to follow in similar footsteps.

Marcy LaFramboise is the owner of the non-profit shelter in Michigan, combined her desire to author her own book with the need to raise funds for her shelter and decided to go the traditional publishing route.

Given the challenges that go with the traditional publishing route, it’s uncertain there will be a great deal of profit from her initial book, she already has plans for a subsequent book which will definitely help get the profit engine roaring.

Interestingly, there are many others following similar footsteps, but choosing to self-publish their work – either choosing print-on-demand companies or even choosing to write their own e-books and sell it themselves online.

In fact, the profit margins are much more enticing for such an approach.  Selling physical, self-published books can net the author up to 50%, while traditional publishing leaves the author with 5-10% of the selling price.

Even more interesting is the creation of an e-book or digital or physical course that can not only be priced much higher than the traditional $20 book, but the author can keep up to 90% of the original selling price and controls the pricing on the product based on demand.

What about you, is it time you put together your own report, book, e-books or information product?
